Pastor's Paragraphs
May 8, 2008
"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord,
not for men." (Colossians 3:23)
There is a distinctive difference
between doing something for people and doing something for God. If we
serve in an effort to receive the praise or appreciation of people we will
frequently experience disappointment. Unfortunately, people are not
always aware or able to fully appreciate things we may do for them. Some
are never satisfied regardless of how hard we try to please them. Both our
personal sacrifices and services may go un-noticed by other. These are
just a few of the reasons why our motivation for ministry should be rooted
in our love for the Lord and our desire to bring glory to God.
Paul practices what he preached when
he admonished Christians living in Collossae to work with all their hearts
for the Lord and not for men. A study of Paul's life reveals that he was
often misunderstood, criticized, and persecuted. Most men would have
thrown in the towel and returned to their old way of life. To his credit
Paul persevered. he clearly understood that he was seeking to serve the
Lord and that God would recognize and reward his efforts.
After three decades of ministry I
understand that it takes a lot of effort from a lot of people to build an
effective church. I appreciate both those who stand in the spotlight as
well as those who serve in the shadows. There will definitely be moments
when we are tempted to "Become weary in well doing" as Paul mentions in
another biblical book. During such moments don't give up. Keep on keeping
on! Remember - you are serving God by serving others.
God is aware of everything you do and
will reward those who are faithful to the finish. Give God your best
effort. He deserves it for he gave His best when He sent Jesus to die on
the cross on your behalf. What hope would we have if Jesus became
discouraged, frustrated and quit before he reached Mt. Calvary. Because
Jesus kept on keeping on, He was able to speak these wrods from the cross,
"It is finished!" Don't stop serving prematurely. Anyone can quit. It
takes a person of character and commitment to complete a God-given
assignment.
See YOU Sunday!
